A New Beginning for Noura

Noura’s story is one of thousands. It reminds us that in times of crisis, a timely, child-focused response makes all the difference—not only in meeting basic needs, but in helping children begin to recover, emotionally and socially.

Noura’s Story: Finding Comfort After the Quake

A Life Changed in Minutes

Noura, a six-year-old girl from western Aleppo, experienced a life-altering moment on February 6th when the devastating earthquake struck. The violent shaking of their house forced Noura and her family to flee immediately, creating immense panic for the young girl.

They sought refuge in a tent within a shelter center in rural Aleppo, surrounded by unfamiliar faces – a stark departure from her usual environment. For a six-year-old, this sudden displacement meant losing not just her home, but her sense of security, familiarity, and childhood normalcy.

"Life here in the camp is so tough. The tent is sometimes freezing, and other times it's too hot. I feel bored most of the time because all the children are strangers to me. I don't know any of them. I started attending a school that was recently established close to us. However, I have no friends. I don't know anyone."

Our Response: Restoring Hope

When our emergency response team encountered Noura at the shelter center, we saw a child struggling with isolation and the trauma of displacement. Through our specialized approach to child protection in emergencies, we began connecting with Noura and other children through carefully designed recreational activities.

Noura received winter and protection kits complete with warm clothing, stationery, and toys – essential items that serve as more than just supplies. These materials represent comfort, dignity, and most importantly, a reminder that someone cares about her well-being.

The Path to Recovery

Our recreational activities at the shelter center became Noura’s gateway to healing. These programs, designed specifically for children affected by emergencies, play a vital role in helping young survivors process trauma and begin their journey toward recovery.

Through these initiatives, children like Noura start to rebuild their sense of normalcy, form new connections, and rediscover the joy that every child deserves – even in the most challenging circumstances.
