February 16, 2021

This event discussed the state of adolescent rights in Syria and highlighted the importance of empowering adolescents and the role of international humanitarian actors in supporting their rights. Maimouna Al-Ammar, representing Child Guardians, identified four key factors leading to youth militarization in Syria: child marriages, deteriorating educational systems, lack of learning opportunities, and absence of livelihood sources that provide purpose and security.

Al-Ammar emphasized that Syrian children face various disruptions and barriers to adequate education, with orphaned children being particularly vulnerable due to added trauma from losing parents. The lack of access to higher education was highlighted as a main barrier facing children. Al-Ammar concluded with recommendations on supporting Syrian youth.
