Tayyara Warak Magazine

The first Arabic child protection magazine for children aged 7-14, delivering safety messages through stories, songs, and crafts – 180,000 copies distributed to 20,000 children across Syria.

About Tayyara Warak

Promoting child protection, well-being, and resilience through engaging and culturally relevant content

Launched in 2012, Tayyara Warak is the first Arabic child protection magazine designed for children aged 7 to 14. Developed by volunteers and child protection experts at Child Guardians, the magazine delivers age-appropriate messages on safety, resilience, and emotional well-being through stories, songs, riddles, and hands-on activities.

Each issue delivers key protection messages to children, including:

  • How to stay safe in emergencies, including during bombings, conflict, and displacement
  • Basic health and hygiene practices to promote personal well-being
  • Psychosocial support through age-appropriate stories that help children understand and cope with distress
  • Skills for critical thinking, empathy, and non-violent conflict resolution
  • Messages that promote inclusion, dignity, and child rights awareness

Our Impact

Between 2013 and 2016, we produced, printed, and distributed over 180,000 copies, reaching more than 20,000 children inside Syria — many of whom had little or no access to formal education or child-friendly spaces.

Sustainability and the Way Forward

Since its launch, Tayyara Warak has been powered by the dedication of volunteers. However, due to the protracted nature of the conflict and dwindling resources, core funding ceased at the end of 2016. Despite these challenges, Child Guardians has continued to produce and distribute special issues whenever partial funding could be secured.

With sustained support, we plan to:

  • Produce high-quality content on urgent protection themes relevant to children and caregivers
  • Distribute physical copies directly to children — free of charge — particularly targeting those out of school or in hard-to-reach areas
  • Provide laminated, shareable editions for schools to encourage classroom and library use
  • Establish dedicated Tayyara Warak reading corners in schools and child-friendly spaces as part of future outreach campaigns
Tayyara Warak remains one of Child Guardians’ most ambitious and beloved initiatives. Its issues continue to inspire, educate, and protect children across Syria, even in the most challenging circumstances.
