Forced Displacement

Our 2017 advocacy campaign with No Peace Without Justice raised awareness about forced displacement violations and called for safe return provisions in reconciliation agreements.

About this initiative

Documenting crimes, demanding justice, and defending the right of return

In 2017, Child Guardians launched the Forced Displacement advocacy campaign to shed light on one of the most harrowing and underreported violations of the Syrian conflict: the forcible removal of civilian populations under siege, fear, and coercion.

Partnering with No Peace Without Justice, the campaign documented and exposed how entire communities were pushed out of their homes under unlawful truces — often after enduring prolonged sieges that left families starving, isolated, and desperate.

Our advocacy efforts focused on:

  • Documented forced displacement cases and shared materials with key international stakeholders
  • Presented campaign findings in Brussels during a dedicated side event
  • Called on all parties to include provisions protecting civilians and guaranteeing their right to return in reconciliation or truce agreements
  • Continued advocacy efforts to prevent future occurrences and protect forcibly displaced children
As Amnesty International notes:

The government’s campaign of sieges, unlawful killings, and forced displacement which has uprooted thousands of civilians and forced them to live in dire conditions, constitutes crimes against humanity.
